Linux becomes only OS to escape PWN 2 OWN

The next version of Office moved a step closer to reality on Monday as Microsoft released an invitation-only technical preview of Office 2010. Also, it won't show off the program's biggest change--the addition of browser-based versions of Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and OneNote. The applications, which run in Safari, Firefox, and Internet Explorer, are aimed at both expanding the number of Office users within businesses as well as holding the ground threatened by Google Docs and other Web-based productivity programs. On the desktop side, Microsoft plans a broader beta of the software later this year, with a final release in the first half of 2010. Word gets a collection of cool image effects that stem from the DaVinci Imaging Engine that was part of Microsoft's now-discontinued Digital Image Suite product. Word, as well as the other programs, gets a new "paste preview" tool that lets users hover over different paste options and see what their paste will look like before accepting that selection. Excel gets a new feature called Spark lines, which are tiny graphs that can fit in a single cell of a spreadsheet. PowerPoint picks up video editing features as well as the ability to create a video of one's presentation, including voice annotations. The Outlook e-mail and calendar program adds a conversation view feature, a la Gmail. plans to make the browser-based versions a free part of Windows Live next year, but hasn't decided whether they will include advertising.

Sony's DVDirect VRD-MC6 Camcorder-To-DVD Recorder Creates AVCHD DVDs With 5.1 Sound
Sony's new VRD-MC6 DVDirect is a new gadget and it looks and acts an awful lot like the previous VRD-MC10 and VRD-MC5. It can take 1080i video with 5.1 audio off your Handy cam’s drive or Memory Stick and shoot out an AVCHD DVD that plays back on compatible Blu-ray drives like the PS3. It can also transfer standard-definition home videos to DVD discs without the need of a computer from virtually any camcorder, VCR or digital video recorder. The new model includes Digital Video (i.LINK/FireWire/IEEE-1394), Composite Video inputs, and USB (for Sony hard drive, DVD and Memory Stick media-based Handycam camcorders). DVD video discs recorded in this manner are playable in most consumer DVD players.

Lenovo ThinkPad X100e Ultraportable Notebook
As well as launching the new ThinkPad Edge, Lenovo has also added a new ultraportable notebook to their range with the launch of the ThinkPad X100e.The Lenovo ThinkPad X100e features an 11.6 inch HD display, and comes with either an AMD Athlon Neo, Althlon Neo X2 or Turion X2 processor, a full sized keyboard and a TrackPoint and multitouch touchpad.
On top of that the Lenovo Thinkpad X100e also comes with a built in web camera, 802.11n WiFi, Gigabit Ethernet, and the choice to add in Bluetooth and WWAN.
The Lenovo Thinkpad X100e will also be available from the 5th of January and prices start at just $449.
Microsoft Muscle Control
Microsoft has just released information of its new muscle control interface technology which allows you to control devices using your muscles. Which opens up a whole new dimension in possible game and real world controllers for devices.
The new technology uses “electromyography”, or EMG which records the electrical activity of muscles and translate those signals into instructions. Check out the video after the jump.
As computing and displays begin to integrate more seamlessly into our environment and are used in situations where the user is not always focused on the computing task, it is important to consider mechanisms for acquiring human input that may not necessarily require direct manipulation of a physical implement.
We explore the feasibility of muscle-computer input: an interaction methodology that directly senses and decodes human muscular activity rather than relying on physical device actuation or user actions that are externally visible or audible.
